Which Hawai’ian Island Should You Visit
Considering Hawai’i as your next holiday destination? Good choice – this tropical haven is brimming with otherworldly natural splendour and has something for everyone to enjoy.
But with eight major islands within the Hawai’ian archipelago, each offering something unique, choosing where to holiday in Hawai’i can be tricky. You may be wondering whether to stay in the laidback capital of Honolulu or venture out to one of the lesser-visited surrounding islands.
To help determine which Hawai’ian Island is your perfect holiday destination, let’s explore the four islands most popular amongst tourists: O’ahu, Maui, Island of Hawai’i and Kauai.
O’ahu
O’ahu
Known as the ‘Heart of Hawai’i’, the island of O’ahu is easily Hawaii’s most popular holiday destination. The perfect base for first-time visitors, O’ahu is home to the state capital of Honolulu (where most visitors choose to stay) and the archipelago’s main international airport. Plus, with a vast array of accommodation, activities and attractions, you’ll never go bored when holidaying on O’ahu.
Whether you seek a relaxing tropical getaway or an action-packed adventure, there is plenty to see and do on O’ahu. With 180 kilometres of coastline, O’ahu boasts some of Hawaii’s most iconic beaches, including Waikiki Beach and the North Shore – if you’ve ever wanted to learn to surf, O’ahu is the place. Be sure to hike Diamond Head for unreal views over Honolulu and pay a visit to Pearl Harbor to reflect on the devasting effects of war. Some other O’ahu must-dos include snorkelling at Hanauma Bay, shopping at Ala Moana Center, connecting with Hawai’ian culture at the Polynesian Cultural Center and spiking your adrenaline at Kualoa Ranch.
When it comes to accommodation, O’ahu offers something to suit every traveller, with most resorts centred in the Waikiki area, where you’ll find an endless stream of dining, drinking and shopping options. Discover our O’ahu holidays here.
Maui
Maui
Five-star luxury meets rugged natural splendour on the island of Maui. Also known as ‘The Valley Isle’, Maui is the second-most visited Hawai’ian Island and can be reached in an easy 40-minute flight from Honolulu. Most famous for its black-sand beaches, farm-to-table cuisine and lush rainforest landscapes, it’s no wonder that Maui has been voted ‘Best Island in the United States’ by Conde Nast Traveller readers for over 20 years!
A holiday on Maui will surely be packed with adventure, as the island offers a rich variety of activities and attractions to suit every traveller. Snap a shot of Hawaii’s most picturesque black-sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park or snorkel amongst vibrant fish and marine life at Molokini Crater, an extinct volcanic caldera located just off the coast of Maui. The best way to discover Maui is to drive the Road to Hana, an 83-kilometre scenic route that passes some of the island’s most breathtaking natural attractions. Some other popular activities in Maui include whale watching in the Auau Channel, exploring the sacred Iao Valley State Park, golfing at Wailea Golf Club and watching the sunrise atop Mount Haleakala.
Most visitors to Maui choose to stay in the Kaanapali or Wailea areas, both of which are home to an abundance of high-end beachfront resorts. Discover our Maui holidays here.
Island of Hawai’i
Island of Hawai’i
For a taste of what Hawai’i was like before becoming a major tourist destination, head to the Island of Hawai’i. More commonly known as the ‘Big Island’, Hawai’i is both the youngest and largest island in the Hawai’ian archipelago. As one of the most ecologically diverse places on the globe, and just a 50-minute flight from Honolulu, the Big Island is well worth adding to your Hawai’i itinerary.
Home to some of Hawaii’s most spectacular natural wonders and historic sights, there are endless things to do while holidaying on the Big Island. Being the only island where you can get up close to an active volcano, a visit to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is an absolute must. Here, you can hike across a solidified lava lake, walk through lava tubes and, if you’re lucky, witness the lava flow of Kilauea! For coffee lovers, be sure to visit one of many coffee farms in Kona – the Big Island is the only place in the United States where coffee is grown commercially. Other popular things to do on the Island of Hawai’i include snorkelling with manta rays, stargazing on the summit of Mauna Kea, horseback riding through the Waipio Valley and spotting turtles at Punaluu Black Sand Beach. There’s a reason that Big Island is known as ‘Hawaii’s Island of Adventure’!
There are two main towns on the Big Island that tourists tend to flock to: Kona and Hilo, each offering a different perspective of the island. Discover our Island of Hawai’i holidays here.
Kauai
Kauai
If you wish to explore Hawai’i off-the-beaten-track, add the island of Kauai to your bucket list. Known as the ‘Garden Isle’, Kauai is the oldest island in the Hawai’ian archipelago and can be reached in a 40-minute flight from Honolulu. Here, only 10 percent of the land is developed – the rest is draped in emerald valleys, plunging waterfalls and jagged cliffs. Plus, with a laidback atmosphere and rich local culture, Kauai is what Hawai’i holiday dreams are made of!
No matter what kind of holiday you’re after, you’ll find a multitude of things to do around Kauai. Keep in mind that some of Kauai’s most iconic attractions are only accessible by sea or air – take a scenic cruise around the sacred sea cliffs of the Napali Coast or set flight over the spectacular Waimea Canyon, nicknamed the ‘Grand Canyon of the Pacific’. Additional Kauai must-dos include kayaking on the Wailua River, searching for Hawai’ian monk seals at Poipu Beach Park, hiking to Wailua Falls and ziplining through the jungle on some of Hawaii’s longest courses.
Keep in mind that Kauai is considered one of the rainiest destinations on earth – for sunnier weather (and more restaurants and shopping opportunities), be sure to stay on the South Shore. Discover our Kauai holidays here.
