Expert Insights: Claire and Kat’s Hawaii Holiday
Seeking a sun-soaked holiday spent relaxing at luxe resorts, swimming in the ocean and enjoying delicious food and drink? My Hawaii Experts, Claire and Kat, recently returned from a trip to Waikiki and have all the insider tips to ensure your own holiday is one to remember. Here’s what they had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
Claire: I loved our cruise with Maitaʻi Catamaran. We did this on arrival in Hawaii, and it was the most perfect way to kick off our trip, seeing the iconic Waikiki skyline and Diamond Head from the water. Everything from the weather to the music to the Mai Tais was PERFECT.
Kat: If I had to choose a favourite experience, it would be the surfing lesson we took with Monitz Family Surf. Not just because surfing at Waikiki Beach is a Hawaii must-do, but because the instructors were absolutely amazing. By the end of the lesson, each of us managed to catch a few waves, which was incredibly rewarding.
Which resorts would you recommend?
Claire: I absolutely loved OUTRIGGER Reef Waikiki Beach Resort. I’m a sucker for a beautiful sunset, and was not disappointed by the views from their Oceanfront Rooms. The whole resort has been renovated recently, so all of the amenities feel new and refreshed. A huge bonus is their Club Lounge, where guests can enjoy evening cocktails and canapes. Plus, the resort offers great views of the Friday night fireworks on Waikiki Beach!
Kat: There’s something very special about The Royal Hawaiian and it’s pink palace façade, although it’s rivalled closely by sister property, Moana Surfrider. Both of these resorts are much grander in size than I expected, and the appreciation of their historic roots that really set them apart from their more modern neighbours. Staying at either of these resorts is a unique experience, and their beachfront positions don’t hurt either.
Where did you find the best views?
Claire: We hiked Diamond Head on our first afternoon in Hawaii, and the peak offers spectacular views over Waikiki and across to the rest of the island. But for something a little more off the beaten path, I recommend climbing the Koko Crater Trail – that way you’ll get Diamond Head in your viewpoint as well!
Kat: Many resorts offer standout views of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head Crater, but nothing quite compares to seeing it from out at sea. Sailing with Maitaʻi Catamaran looking back at the iconic skyline whilst sipping cocktails and listening to island beats is definitely a core memory.
What surprised you most about Hawaii?
Claire: I was surprised to learn that Oahu has something for absolutely everyone. Every activity we did could be enjoyed by travellers of almost all ages, with a few rare exceptions. It’s the perfect destination for all, and I felt like I could spend weeks there and still want to stay longer.
Kat: Hawaii really is exactly how I imagined it – it definitely lived up to the hype! Plus, I was pleasantly surprised by how accommodating and kind the locals were.
What would you do differently next time?
Claire: I would love to go back to Oahu to explore more of the North Shore and snorkel in Hanauma Bay. Plus, visiting some of the other islands, especially Maui, is at the top of my list for the next time I plan a trip to Hawaii.
Kat: I agree! Having only experienced Oahu, and mostly Waikiki at that, it would be amazing to revisit and explore the North Shore and the other islands. Knowing that Oahu already has so much to offer in the form of hikes, historic landmarks, shopping and beaches, I can only imagine what the other islands have in store!
What were your favourite meals?
Claire: I really enjoyed my dinner at OUTRIGGER Reef Waikiki Beach Resort’s Kani Ka Pila Grille. My steak was cooked to perfection, and we shared the pineapple crème brûlée, which was my favourite dish of the entire trip!
Kat: Dinner at Kani Ka Pila Grille was a standout for me too. Although they had your standard western dishes on the menu, many of them had a Hawaiian twist. The poke nachos and pineapple crème brûlée are must-tries! I also dined at Morimoto Asia, where everything was spectacular, especially the miso black cod and sticky ribs.
What are your must-pack items?
Claire: Make sure you bring comfortable shoes! Waikiki is very walkable, and comfy footwear for my daily adventures and shopping sprees were a must!
Kat: My tip is to not overpack! You can purchase anything you need in Hawaii and given the year-round warm temperatures, light, breathable clothing is essential
Who would you recommend Hawaii to?
Claire: I recommend Hawaii to everyone! Those seeking a relaxing holiday will love the luxury beachfront resorts, while adventurers will never run out of hikes, beaches and snorkelling spots to explore. I also think Hawaii is a great option for multi-generational families, as there are activities to keep all ages entertained, plus there’s some great apartment-style accommodations available.
Kat: I second that Hawaii can cater to all types of travellers whether seasoned retirees, young families or honeymooners. However, I would recommend saving a trip to Hawaii for when you have a larger spending budget whilst in-destination, as the AUD to USD conversion can make some things more expensive.
