Diamond Head, O’ahu
Hawaii’s Most Iconic Mountain
Diamond Head is a dormant volcano on the southern end of O’ahu, not far from Waikiki. You can see this giant lush mountain reaching over the shore from Waikiki’s beaches, and this backdrop makes it one of the most iconic beach photographs in the world. Venturing to the top will cost you a few steep steps but the reward is stunning views of the island. The site holds cultural significance as it was home to a ceremonial structure dedicated to the war god Ku, used for worship and human sacrifice.
An aerial view of Diamond Head (Le’ahi) shows the massive crater at the centre and is a must for any avid walker holidaying in Hawai’i. The hike usually takes just over two hours, plus time spent relaxing, snacking, and view-gazing. Add 45 minutes each way if you’re walking from Waikiki.
